I think I’m far more sympathetic to feminism than you are, Susan, but I’m not sure we’re that far apart on some of the issues you’ve discussed here. For example, I agree that the under-representation of women in corporate boardrooms is more likely a reflection of individual women’s choices than of institutionalized sexism (though I believe sexism – against women – is alive and well). And I don’t think I would fit in very well with the sex-positive feminists, either. So maybe modern feminists wouldn’t accept me as one of them, but I would never call myself an anti-feminist, either. I think feminism has become a very muddled concept in the 21st century. We’ve achieved equal educational and, arguably, professional opportunity for women – so where do we go from there? Or have we reached a point where we would need to acknowledge that individual women are all too different to expect us to make sacrifices in the name of the “sisterhood”?
